Harbinger is Harbinger

About 2 years ago I started a little fun project, for myself, and to make the grand roleplayer, who came up with this character, smile. Dearest Harbinger, played by Magpie, has been a true inspiration.
Many commissions, other work and new inspiration got in the way, but I could not get myself to put this piece here into the folder of abandoned projects. Eventually, this year, I picked it up again. Considering I had gathered a lot more experience in the meantime, it was hard for me to find a good balance between “continuing and not starting anew entirely” and “refurbishing and correcting”. I left some errors are they were, others I had to fix, and just that alone took me what felt like ages. Finally, I purposefully went with a more “artsy” style, leaving some areas smudged and undefined, as the piece was never gonna be the same style as, for example, the Snow Flake. However, I gave it just as much love in the end, designed the Tarot Cards as Magpie would ah preferred them (I hope) and finally went over it with many -MANY- finishing touches.

Now all that is left is to hope that he, who created this magnificent piece of cackling shit, likes the picture as well. .___. This design here was based on Conan Exiles assets, a game he moved on from as he has lately recreated Harbinger in FFXIV, creating his own grand art for him, too, AND gathering fanart already as well.

For Splash Arts, over-detailing is not a term I can justify. It brings me joy to work on little things that might go unnoticed at a quick glance but bring more depth, character, and realism to the picture.

Somehow I just have a love for details for any kind of string, rope, or thread. Needless to say, I also love working on hair and feather details that are rather similiar; it is incredibly satisfying, and maybe a quick glance from most viewers will not catch details like these, but they bring me happiness.

Whereas I originally started the portrait for Harbinger way before I returned to it and finished it, I did not want to re-do it, despite having honed my skills in the meantime. After all, I embrace the journey of my art progress, but regardless, I was determined to showcase my love and inspiration for Magpie’s character. I created two tarot cards from scratch and brought them into the piece.

Harbinger back then was roleplayed by Magpie as a God of Death, neutrally observing but equally celebrating life. To match the background of this wonderful character, I tinkered on the design of the tarot cards until I deemed them worthy of Harbinger. White and black were used for a basic high contrast, and gold was the detail that underlined the pretty glow of the man’s eyes.
